I love buying flowers, I love arranging flowers, I love gifting flowers, and I especially love admiring the flowers that add color and happiness to my home.
Last winter I decided that this obsession needed to be taken up a notch. It was time to to embark on my own cut flower journey!
While my dream includes someday having a giant field with hundreds of different flowers, I decided to start small with a 6’ by 3’ raised bed, specifically dedicated to my absolute favorite flower: dahlias.
A few hours and $100 later, Cody and I completed our first flower bed. It was simple to build and required only a saw and drill. (If you don’t have a saw, I’ve heard that some hardware stores will cut your wood pieces to size for you!)
The journey to growing dahlias, however, was a labor of love! Back in March, I started growing the dahlias inside. They don’t like cold, and need to stay indoors and protected until the risk of frost is gone. By May, they had grown about a foot tall, and were ready to be transplanted to the raised bed.
In the last couple weeks these beautiful buds have transformed into the most stunning dahlias. I took my nephew outside yesterday to show him the bright colors, and we were both in awe! Is there anything more dreamy than raindrops on petals?!
Stay tuned as this adventure continues! Pickling cucumbers are well on their way, but we will save that for another post! ☺️
